They called him “Dirt” back home in New Martinsville, West Virginia. It wasn’t a glamorous nickname. He earned it by doing the grunt work on the football team, getting down in the dirt of Magnolia High School's Alumni Field. It helped that there was a detergent commercial at the time whose slogan was “stronger than dirt,” which elevated "Dirt" to quite a formidable opponent. He went on to play as the smallest offensive lineman in the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference and, as team captain, helped lead the Fairmont State Falcons to their 1974 WVIAC Championship. He worked his way through the college football coaching ranks, with each step considered a little better than the one before. Then, in 2000, his steps led him back home as Don Nehlen’s quarterback coach at West Virginia University. He was one of only two coaches retained by new head coach Rich Rodriguez in 2001, and he stayed on staff primarily as Rich’s quarterback coach and special teams coordinator. When Rich made his move to the University of Michigan, Bill was named WVU’s interim head coach for the 2008 Fiesta Bowl against the 3rd ranked University of Oklahoma. Following an historic WVU upset of Oklahoma, Bill Stewart was named WVU’s 32nd head football coach. He got there by way of hard work and perseverance. His wasn't a glamorous name, yet he won. This book is a collection of Bill's quotes as he told his story through countless interviews given during his three years as WVU's head football coach. It is a one-stop shop of Coach Stew stories on everything from growing up in New Martinsville, through his early coaching stops, to his decisions as head coach. It is Bill Stewart, in his own words.

I realize that I may be biased since I graduated Magnolia High School one year behind Bill Stewart. The author did a good job putting "his own words" into a chronological and easy flowing order. I will say that if you do not understand the game of football, you may struggle through parts of this book. I have many friends who will wonder what a "stunt" or a "pick" is .... the head coaching years are laden with the jargon. Stay with it, though, because the Billy Stewart-isms just continue to make you smile. And if you are a native West Virginian, even after his death, he continues to make us proud to be a Mountaineer. I will also say that I was a little disappointed and surprised that there were misspellings of people's last names, including the late, great Woody "Hays". Perhaps something was lost in the Kindle translation. That being said, kudos to Susan Jones for developing this project, and thank you to Karen Kacor Stewart and Blaine for allowing her to share New Martinsville's favorite son with the world.

I couldn't put it down. I was a friend of Bills and the book was like you were talking to him.
Great book. Susan did a good job of adding information that I didn't know about Coach Stew. Would make an excellent Christmas gift for any Mountaineer fan
I knew Bill and his family. His brother graduated from High School with me. This book brought back so many memories.
Genuine and Authentic was how I would describe the young Bill Stewart I knew as a coach. Played for Coach Stew during the '78 season at Salem College, WV. He liked to joke around and have a good time as well as working hard. During 3 a days at SC he was the designated coach to wake everybody up at 6 a.m. For breakfast. You could hear him coming down the hall as he forearm shivered the doors, talking loud and one of his favorite sayings as he did this was "get out of bed you coward." He was challenging us, because we were tired, homesick as freshman, and didn't always want to get out of bed and go to practice. My teammates and I Still talk about his antics and the impression he left on us then and now 37 years later. His name always brings a smile to my face and heartfelt chuckle whenever I think of him.
A Great Read !!
a good read about a very down to earth person who put hisn love for his family, God, his home state and WVU above everything. A true mountineer.
Well written and a great tribute to a great man!
